What are coloured diamonds?

Sometimes known as ‘fancy’ diamonds, coloured diamonds are diamonds that have a noticeable colour when viewed in the face-up position. Some coloured diamonds are very rare and, due to this, can command a high price. However, coloured diamonds grown in laboratories have become more popular over the past few years and these are more affordable, as with lab grown diamonds more generally.

How are coloured diamonds formed?

Coloured diamonds are formed in the same way as a ‘normal’ diamond but with one difference. When foreign particles are trapped during the crystallisation process, this alters the chemical process which, in turn, results in coloured diamonds being created.

How are coloured diamonds graded?

White natural diamonds are graded according to their lack of colour, while coloured diamonds are graded based on the intensity of their colour. The GIA system grades coloured diamonds from 'Fancy Light' for less intense colours through to 'Fancy Vivid' for more intense and rarer diamonds.

Which coloured diamond should I choose?

Like gemstones, choosing a coloured diamond engagement ring can make your ring really stand out. When designing your perfect engagement ring, you can choose from blue, pink or yellow coloured diamonds. These will then differ in terms of their particular hue, from less intense to more vivid.
